| Welcome to Alderney Accommodation | |||
With its breathtaking views and relaxing atmosphere, the Island of Alderney is the perfect setting for a self-catering Island holiday. |
When people think of the Channel Islands, they normally think of Jersey, Guernsey and maybe Herm and Sark, but not many know about the Northernmost Channel Island, Alderney. |
It's often said that Alderney is the Channel Island's best kept secret and, for good reason . . . |
We have to admit that it's easier to get to the others, as there are regular car ferries to them. However, most visitors reckon that this is our secret, since our roads are pretty quiet, with a smattering of local cars. |
Getting to Alderney is quick and easy, either from the UK, or France, as we're only 70, or 8 miles from either country. Visitors normally take the Trislander aeroplanes from Southampton, or via Guernsey or Jersey, connecting from several UK and European cities. |
To enjoy the special ambience, Alderney Accommodation offer a number of individual self-catering properties, ranging from traditional terraced cottages through to impressive town houses, in both Town and close to beach locations. |
Alderney's heritage is partly French - road names such as Venelle des Gaudions, La Val and Le Huret being just some of many, with local names such as Audoire, Dupont, and Gaudion showing the origins of some of the families. |
Indeed, as we're only 8 miles from the Cap de la Hague, on a good day, with the wind in the right direction, it's just possible to catch a faint whiff of Moules Marinier coming from Gorey . . . or maybe it's actually from one of our sea-food restaurants. |
On the history trail, for those of a more serious nature, Alderney's historical origins, starting from the Iron Age, up to the present, offer the visitor an unusual glimpse into a time-capsule that progress has left largely untouched. |
Although some of our visitors come over for the serious stuff, such as Napoleonic era forts, samples of Festung Europa from WW II, ornithology - that's bird watching to you and me - many come to bask on the clean, sandy beaches and bathe in the beautiful, clear blue sea. |
We always welcome young families who come just to enjoy the good, old-fashioned 'bucket-and-spade' holiday, especially as Alderney is one of the few places left where children can enjoy themselves as we used to do way back when . . . |
Whilst the youngsters are making the sandcastles and hunting in the abundant rock pools, adults find that the peace and seclusion of the beaches develops a tranquillity unknown in most holiday destinations. |
Donning a mask, snorkel and fins will open up a very different view of Alderney's coastline - indeed, we do welcome scuba divers, as there are some interesting wrecks around our shores. |
Alderney is a very special place, often described as magical. Those who are regular visitors have already discovered the many special attributes that go together to make up this most desirable holiday venue. |
Perhaps you might visit someday soon and see whether you, too, will fall under Alderney's spell? |
